Marmaris is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Turkey. The coastal town is located in a bay surrounded by greenery on the South Aegean Coast and has been a favourite beach destination for years, especially among young people. There is nothing left of the once quiet fishing village; mass tourism is the order of the day. There are 91.000 people living in Marmaris with the surronding villages. But in the summer season, the population of Marmaris rises to more than 400,000.
History
Marmaris was once called Physkos and belonged to the Carian Empire in the 6th century BC. From the third century B.C., a turbulent period began, and Marmaris came successively in the hands of Egyptians, Assyrians, Ionians, and Dorians. In 138 B.C. the city was transferred to the Romans, who ruled the city from the island of Rhodes. After the Romans, the city was still conquered by Arabs and Byzantines. An important period began when the city fell into the hands of the Ottomans in 1425. The name Physkos was changed in the Ottoman period to Mimaras, which eventually became Marmaris. The Ottomans built the castle of Marmaris in 1522. In today’s Marmaris you will find some remains of the long history of the city and the different cultures that have reigned there. Marmaris is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey.
Landscape
The landscape around Marmaris is characterized by beautiful bays along the coast and green mountain slopes inland. The slopes are covered with pine forests. The flatter parts of the landscape are still used for agriculture.
Architecture
Great architecture can be found on the castle hill in the old part of Marmaris. Here you will find traditional houses in the typical style of this region. Typical buildings of Turkey are the Caravanserai, of which you can find an example in Marmaris. Lovers of ancient architecture should visit Ephesus, Kaunos and Knidos, where remnants of classical antiquity can be found.
