Lamai Beach

Lamai Beach is one of Koh Samui’s most scenic and popular beaches, located on the southeastern coast of the island. Known for its stunning crescent-shaped coastline, Lamai offers a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the bustling Chaweng Beach, making it a perfect spot for those seeking relaxation with easy access to amenities. The beach features soft golden sand, clear turquoise waters, and a backdrop of lush hills. While Lamai is quieter, it still offers a great mix of activities, from swimming and sunbathing to beachside dining and lively nightlife.

Lamai Beach Tours & Excursions

The Basics

Lamai Beach is well-developed but maintains a peaceful charm with a variety of accommodations, ranging from budget guesthouses to mid-range resorts. The beach is ideal for a relaxing day, offering gentle waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as jet skiing and kayaking. Along the beach, you’ll find plenty of beach bars, restaurants, and small shops selling local crafts. Lamai is a great base for exploring Koh Samui’s natural attractions, such as Na Muang Waterfalls and the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks.

Things to Know Before You Go

When visiting Lamai Beach, it’s good to know that while the beach is quieter than Chaweng, it can still get busy during peak seasons. You’ll find various amenities like beach loungers, umbrellas, and plenty of dining options, but the beach doesn’t have as much shade as some other areas, so sun protection is a must. Be cautious while swimming during the low tide as the beach can have some rocky patches. The beach is also a hotspot for water sports, so expect a lively atmosphere, especially on weekends.

How to Get There

Lamai Beach is located about a 15-minute drive south of Chaweng Beach and can be easily accessed by car, taxi, or scooter. If you’re staying in Chaweng, you can simply rent a scooter or take a taxi to reach Lamai. The road leading to the beach is well-maintained and offers scenic views of the coastline. If you're coming from Samui International Airport, the drive is around 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Public transportation, such as songthaews (shared taxis), also runs between major areas on the island.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Lamai Beach is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is sunny, and the sea is calm. The dry months offer the most pleasant conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying beach activities. If you’re looking for a quieter experience, visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during the high season. Lamai can be a little quieter than Chaweng, but it still attracts many tourists during the peak months. During the rainy season (May to October), be prepared for occasional showers, and keep in mind that the sea can be a little rougher.

Day Trips from Koh Samui

Lamai Beach is an excellent base for day trips and exploring the natural beauty of Koh Samui. While you're in the area, be sure to check out the nearby Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks (Hin Ta and Hin Yai), a famous rock formation that has become an iconic landmark on the island. You can also take a short trip to the Na Muang Waterfalls or hike up to the Secret Buddha Garden for panoramic views. If you enjoy exploring by boat, consider taking a half-day trip to nearby Ang Thong National Marine Park, known for its stunning beaches and clear blue waters perfect for snorkeling.
