Azraq Castle

Azraq Castle, also known as Qasr al-Azraq, is a historic black basalt fortress located in the heart of Jordan’s eastern desert, near the town of Azraq. Built by the Romans in the 3rd century AD and later expanded by the Umayyads and Ayyubids, the castle’s strategic location made it an important military and trade hub. Its most famous occupant was T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), who used the castle as his headquarters during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1917-1918. Today, the castle stands as a testament to Jordan’s rich history and offers visitors a chance to explore its imposing walls and learn about its past.

Azraq Castle Tours & Excursions

The Basics

Azraq Castle is open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM in summer and 8 AM to 4 PM in winter. Entry costs 3 JOD for adults. Made entirely of local black basalt, the castle’s unique architecture contrasts beautifully with the surrounding desert landscape. Visitors can explore its large courtyard, ancient chambers, and the room where Lawrence of Arabia lived and worked. Informative plaques provide historical context, but hiring a guide can enhance your experience by offering deeper insights into the castle’s role throughout history.

Things to Know Before You Go

Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the castle’s floors are uneven, and some areas require climbing steps. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water, especially if visiting during the warmer months. While the castle itself doesn’t have facilities, there are small shops and cafes in the nearby town of Azraq where you can grab refreshments. Pairing your visit with a trip to the nearby Azraq Wetland Reserve or other desert castles like Qasr Amra and Qasr Kharana makes for a fuller day of exploration.

How to Get There

Azraq Castle is located about 100 km east of Amman, and the drive takes approximately 1.5 hours via Route 30. The easiest way to reach the castle is by car or taxi. Ride-hailing services like Uber and Careem may not be available in this remote area, so it’s best to arrange transportation in advance. Many tour operators offer guided day trips from Amman that include Azraq Castle along with other desert castles. Parking is available near the entrance.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Azraq Castle is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are more pleasant for exploring the desert environment. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best light for photography and a more comfortable experience. Summers can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C, so visiting during midday is not recommended.
