Mt. Toubkal Tours & Excursions

The Basics

Mt. Toubkal is situated in Toubkal National Park, a protected area in the High Atlas range. The trek to the summit typically takes two days, with the first day spent hiking up to a refuge for an overnight stay, and the second day dedicated to reaching the summit and returning. While the climb is demanding, it does not require technical mountaineering skills, making it accessible to those with basic hiking experience. The region is home to rich biodiversity, including endemic species of plants and animals. The trek also passes through traditional Berber villages, where you can experience local culture and hospitality.

Things to Know Before You Go

Climbing Mt. Toubkal requires physical preparation, as the ascent is strenuous, with high altitudes that may cause altitude sickness. It’s important to acclimatize by spending a night at the refuge before attempting the summit. Bring sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing (even in summer), sunscreen, and plenty of water. A guide is recommended for the trek, as the route can be challenging and signs may be unclear. If you are not used to high altitudes, consider taking it slow and staying hydrated to avoid altitude sickness. Keep in mind that the weather can change quickly, and temperatures can drop dramatically at higher elevations.

How to Get There

Mt. Toubkal is located about 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Marrakech, making it easily accessible for a day trip or longer trekking expedition. The starting point of the trek is Imlil, a small village at the foot of the mountain, which can be reached by taxi or private transport from Marrakech. From Imlil, hikers begin the journey towards the Toubkal refuge, typically in a group with a local guide. If you prefer a more organized experience, many tour operators in Marrakech offer guided trips to Toubkal, including transportation, meals, and guides. Public transportation to Imlil is also available, but it can be less convenient.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Mt. Toubkal is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and the trails are accessible. Summer months can be hot at lower altitudes, while the higher altitudes of Toubkal can still be quite chilly even in the warmer months. Winter (December to March) is a more challenging time to trek Mt. Toubkal, as snow and ice can make the trail difficult and dangerous. If you plan to trek during winter, be sure to have appropriate gear and experience with winter conditions.

Day Trips from Marrakech

Although summiting Mt. Toubkal typically takes two days, there are options for day trips that offer an introduction to the mountain. Many guided tours depart from Marrakech and take you to Imlil, where you can embark on a shorter trek, exploring the foothills and nearby Berber villages. Some tours offer shorter treks that provide a glimpse of the stunning landscapes without the challenge of summiting the peak. For those with limited time or less experience, these shorter treks allow you to enjoy the beauty of the Atlas Mountains while avoiding the strenuous climb to the summit.
