Avenue of Sphinxes

The Avenue of Sphinxes, or "Sphinx Alley," is a monumental ancient pathway that once connected the Karnak and Luxor Temples. Stretching approximately 2.7 kilometers, this historic road is lined with hundreds of sphinx statues, some with ram heads (symbolizing the god Amun) and others with human heads. The avenue dates back to the reign of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and was later expanded during Nectanebo I’s rule. It served as a ceremonial route for festivals, particularly the annual Opet Festival, during which statues of the gods were paraded between the temples.

Avenue of Sphinxes Tours & Excursions

The Basics

The Avenue of Sphinxes reopened to the public in November 2021 after extensive restoration. It is located in the heart of Luxor, linking Karnak Temple in the north to Luxor Temple in the south. Visitors can access the avenue from either temple, and there is no additional fee if you’ve already purchased entry tickets to one of the temples (Luxor Temple: 200 EGP, Karnak Temple: 300 EGP). Plan to spend about 1–2 hours exploring.

Things to Know Before You Go

The avenue is entirely outdoors, so dress for the weather. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and water are essential, especially if you plan to walk the full length of the avenue. While parts of the avenue are illuminated at night, visiting during the day offers a better view of the statues and their details. Guided tours of Luxor and Karnak Temples often include explanations of the avenue’s significance.

How to Get There

The Avenue of Sphinxes is centrally located in Luxor. From most hotels, you can easily reach the area by taxi or even on foot if you’re staying nearby. Public transportation and private tours also provide convenient access to either temple entrance.

When to Get There

Early morning is the best time to visit, especially if you want to capture photos in soft lighting or avoid the heat during warmer months. Alternatively, visiting at sunset or in the evening is a magical experience as the avenue is beautifully lit, creating a captivating ambiance.

Day Trips from Luxor

Most guided tours of Luxor’s East Bank include a visit to the Avenue of Sphinxes alongside Karnak and Luxor Temples. These tours typically provide detailed historical insights and seamless transportation between sites. If you prefer to explore at your own pace, combine a self-guided walk along the avenue with visits to the two temples for a full day of exploration in Luxor’s ancient heart.
