The Basics

Aït Ben Haddou is a traditional ksar built along the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. The structures are made from mud, clay, and straw, providing natural insulation from the desert heat. At the highest point of the kasbah stands a watchtower, offering panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. The site has been well-preserved and is one of the most photographed locations in Morocco. It’s a perfect example of Berber architecture and has attracted visitors for centuries.

While there, take time to visit the local shops that sell traditional crafts and souvenirs. Be respectful of the local inhabitants, as many still live in the kasbah.

Aït Ben Haddou is easily accessible from Ouarzazate, making it a popular day trip. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Ouarzazate, and the route is well-marked along National Route 9. From Fez, it takes about 6-7 hours by car, but many travelers prefer to break the journey with stops in interesting towns such as Ifrane or Midelt. Guided tours are also available, often combining a visit to Aït Ben Haddou with other nearby attractions, such as the Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate. Public transport options are more limited, so renting a car or joining a tour is the most convenient way to visit.

The best time to visit Aït Ben Haddou is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and the landscapes are particularly beautiful. Summer months can be extremely hot, with temperatures rising above 40°C (104°F), so it's advisable to visit in the cooler seasons. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding the midday heat and enjoying the site in softer light. The kasbah is stunning at sunset, with the golden light reflecting off the walls, so plan to stay for a while to capture the perfect photo.

The site can be visited in a half-day, with enough time to explore the kasbah, take photographs, and enjoy a meal in the nearby restaurants that serve traditional Moroccan dishes. Many visitors combine their trip to Aït Ben Haddou with other local attractions, such as the nearby Kasbah Taourirt, the Fint Oasis, or the Atlas Film Studios. From Fez, a day trip is longer, but it is possible with an early start, and you can explore not only the kasbah but also nearby scenic spots like the Draa Valley or the stunning Atlas Mountains.
