Journey through the past and uncover the mystery surrounding the name Philae. Philae originates from the ancient Egyptian term (Pilak).
Philae, originally known as Pilak in ancient Egyptian, has intrigued historians for centuries. Located in the Aswan region of Egypt, Philae Island was dedicated to the goddess Isis and marked the southernmost navigable point of the Nile, symbolizing the boundary between Upper and Lower Egypt.
The island’s most famous monument is the Temple of Isis, a major religious center built during the Ptolemaic era and expanded by the Romans. Pilak, meaning "the end" or "boundary," reflects the island's position at the edge of Egypt's kingdom. Isis, revered as the goddess of magic, fertility, and protection, was central to the temple’s role.
When the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s threatened to submerge Philae, UNESCO led an effort to relocate the temples to nearby Agilkia Island, preserving this important site.
