Petra

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Petra is a breathtaking archaeological site carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs. Known as the "Rose City," Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom and dates back to around 300 BC. The city thrived as a major trading hub, connecting routes from Arabia, Egypt, and Syria. Today, visitors are awed by its intricate rock-cut architecture, particularly the iconic Al-Khazneh (The Treasury), and its vast network of tombs, temples, and ancient streets. With its rich history and stunning landscapes, Petra is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Jordan.

The Basics

Petra is located in Wadi Musa, about 240 km south of Amman. The site is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM in summer and 6 AM to 4 PM in winter. Entry tickets cost 50 JOD for a one-day visit, with discounts for multi-day passes. The entrance fee for those staying overnight in Jordan is reduced compared to visitors coming from neighboring countries on day trips. Facilities at the visitor center include restrooms, a café, and souvenir shops. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as exploring Petra involves a lot of walking over uneven terrain.

Things to Know Before You Go

Petra requires a fair amount of walking, so it’s best to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially if visiting during the hotter months. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for a deeper understanding of the history and significance of the various sites. Don’t miss the hike to The Monastery (Al-Deir), which offers spectacular views but involves climbing over 800 steps. For an unforgettable experience, consider visiting Petra by night, when the Siq and Treasury are lit by thousands of candles.

How to Get There

From Amman, the easiest way to reach Petra is by car, with the drive taking about 3 hours via the Desert Highway (Route 15). Taxis and private transfers are available but can be costly. A more affordable option is taking the JETT bus, which departs daily from Amman at 6:30 AM, arriving in Petra around 10:30 AM. Booking bus tickets in advance is recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons. Some tour operators offer guided day trips from Amman, which include transportation and a tour of the site.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Petra is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant for walking and exploring. Summer can be extremely hot, with temperatures reaching over 35°C, making it less comfortable for long hikes. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding crowds and capturing the best photos in the soft light. If you plan to attend Petra by Night, check the schedule in advance, as it’s usually held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Day Trips from Amman

While a day trip from Amman to Petra is possible, it’s a long journey, requiring about 3 hours of travel each way. To make the most of your time, consider departing early in the morning. Many tours from Amman offer a guided visit to Petra with a few hours to explore the key sites, including the Siq, Treasury, and Royal Tombs. However, for a more relaxed experience, staying overnight in Wadi Musa allows you to explore at your own pace and even enjoy a second visit to the site the next day. For travelers with limited time, a day trip combined with nearby attractions, such as Little Petra or Wadi Rum, can be arranged by tour operators.
