This was not mentioned in the tour details, and honestly, it felt like a sales pitch rather than a part of the historical experience. As a vegan and someone who is against the use of leather, I found this stop particularly uncomfortable. It would have been much more enjoyable to spend that time visiting the archaeological museum, which I would have preferred over the leather stop. The Ephesus portion of the tour was great, but the overall experience didn’t meet my expectations. We spent only about 1 1/2 hours at Ephesus, and we were rushed through the highlights. In fact, one of the participants had to ask the guide to give us more time at the amphitheater, which was the main highlight of the site. After that, we were taken to lunch, where we were told there was no rush, but it felt like the timing was out of sync. Then, we visited St. Mary’s House, which was very brief, and were taken to a “surprise” leather factory, which felt like a tourist trap. We were given a sample of wine that wasn’t great and then watched a fashion show, where people from the group were asked to participate. Afterward, we were given a lengthy talk about leather jackets, with prices starting at 350 USD, which seemed excessive, especially considering the overall quality. In the store, we felt uncomfortable as curtains were covering the exits, adding to the pressure. I also didn’t appreciate the early 4 a.m. start, only to be rushed through Ephesus and then taken to a commercialized stop. I think people should be informed upfront about the full itinerary and the nature of the stops. While the historical aspects were great, the additional tourist trap aspects took away from the experience. I’d recommend the Ephesus tour, but with more transparency about the rest of the day’s activities.
