He seemed more focused on upselling—pushing a restaurant (which he was likely affiliated with), pashminas, and even pashmina pants when we weren’t informed in advance that men couldn’t wear shorts in the mosque.Additionally, during the tour, he offered us an optional Basilica Cistern visit, charging 900 lira per person, while the actual ticket price was 800 lira. When we questioned him afterward about the extra 100 lira, he admitted it was his commission. While I don’t mind paying for services, transparency from the start would have been appreciated.Another issue was that he only shared historical insights with the people walking closest to him and didn’t wait for the whole group to gather. This left many of us missing out on important details, even though we all paid for the experience. The sites were incredible, but the guiding could have been much better.

However, you can simply decline, and they accept it with no issues. The visit is still worth it for the impressive demonstration and the insight into the traditional carpet trade. We booked the half-day option, so we were separated from the main group after the morning portion and taken to the bazaar by another guide while the rest continued to lunch and Topkapi Palace. This second guide was kind but not very talkative, so we didn’t learn much at that stage. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend it!

The tour of Hagia Sophia was extremely interesting and entertaining, with a knowledgeable guide who shared great insights. However, it was disappointing that part of the tour included a visit to a carpet presentation/sale and a group lunch at a restaurant suggested by the guide. We were not expecting this and decided to leave the tour early to explore the bazaar on our own, even though it was supposed to be included in the ticket. While the historical part of the tour was great, clearer expectations about the itinerary would have made the experience better.
